How to Make a Rental Feel Like Home

Some day we’ll be homeowners together, but for now, we’re renting a place and want to make it feel like home. The price is right, our landlord seems pretty cool and we have a side lawn to enjoy our favorite backyard campfire time.

With all of that being said, we will own property someday but it’s on hold for now. Now that we know we’ll be staying put for a while, I wanted to make our rental feel like home. In the past, I’ve kept things in boxes for the duration of my time in a rental because I’ve never felt like attempting to make a rental place feel like home.

How to Make a Rental Feel Like Home

Where we are now, I feel the place is going to be our rental home for as long as we can afford it and the landlord keeps it as a rental property. This means, I really want to attempt to make our rental feel like home. I won’t be digging our family photos out of the boxes to put on the walls, after all, we don’t have any company anyway, but I will be attempting to do some other things.

Organize the Chaos

I will try to get our living room, dining room, bedrooms, and washer rooms organized a little better so they feel like home. I want nothing more than to have space to work where I can reach for paperwork during my workday when needed, access my printer with ease, and type my little heart out for my blogs and client websites. I want to sit in the living room and feel like it’s bright and cheery.

Curtains and Curtain Rods

When we first arrived here, we had been homeless for five months so our expectations of organization or decor were really low. We were just happy to have an affordable house to rent and call home as well as food in our fridge. Now that we’ve settled in and we’re staying put for a bit, I want to buy some curtain rods and curtains so I can open them during a sunny New England day.

Buy Spice Racks

Originally I put all of our seasonings and spices directly on the counter in our kitchen. This simply wasn’t going to work for the long haul, so I purchase an inexpensive spice rack and then a friend gifted me a second one so that there’s a home {off the counter} for each of the spices containers.

How can I make my rental property feel like home?

The key to making your rental property feel like home is to match the colors, sweep and mop the floors as often as possible, vacuum carpets, and hang art decor pieces up on the walls. Consider throw rugs for areas that seem too open with the hardwood floors. A throw rug can add color and a fabulous touch up for a dreary room.

When hanging items on your rental property wall you must use removable wall decals. Many times the landlord may deduct any permanent damage, including wall hangings stuck to the walls from your security deposit. When you’re looking to make your rental property feel like home always keep in mind what conditions you have in the lease regarding changes to the home.

When we first moved into this rental property we were allowed to paint our bedrooms any color that wasn’t some crazy off-the-wall design. Our youngest son had the pink bedroom so he opted to have his dad paint the walls a darker blue-ish color. The landlord OK’d this prior to my hubs spending a few days getting our son’s bedroom a color that would make his room feel like home.

I used to be of the mind that a rental place was temporary so why settle in? Now that I’m all about making sure that family meets fun for Fun Country Life, I want to make sure our family is feeling secure, safe, and happy in their home. I want to make sure the kids, especialy the eldest, has some stability and a place that can feel like home before she ventures out into the adult world having graduated this year.

So … no matter where you live or what you’re doing out there in the world, I want to remind you that it’s very important that you make your rental feel like home so that you can be in a cheery mindset to live your best life.
